I’m reading Florence Nightingale’s Notes on Nursing for the very first time. Ugh. I’m not going to wax nostalgic at the moment. The thin paperback is not an easy read. And I read a lot.
I’m half-way through the book, and I’ve already skimmed skipped a few pages. Still, I feel like I must read it. I don’t know why…like it makes me a better nurse or something??? I’m not a novice nurse. Do I need to fight the urge to sleep to read this book? I do value Notes on Nursing as part of our profession’s history; I’m just not sure how I feel about Nightingale at the moment. There are quite the varying opinions about her amongst ourselves. It’s a strange conversational dichotomy occurring in my mind, as well.
I will finish what I started. I need more time to think about Nightingale anyway.

August 4, 2010 9:10 amIn her Notes, Nightingale seems to have an unusual affinity for the word effluvia, which I find distracting.

August 7, 2010 3:16 pmIt is interesting how words become dated. What do you think will be thought of our blogs in 100 years.
“How quaint?” or “What were they thinking???”

August 8, 2010 7:11 pmHa! Yes, something like that. “Can you imagine what it must have been like to blog? Oh my gosh. It’s an RSS feed! I haven’t seen one of those in decades!” 😉
Who knows…it will be interesting. My 5 and 3 year olds are growing up in a home without a “home phone,” 2 smartphones they navigate just as easily as adults, 2 computers, podcasted cartoons, movies streamed from our wifi…yes, interesting, for sure, what they’re grandkids will think of my words penned electronically!
