I talk to myself. Often. Don’t kid yourself. You know you do, too. If you don’t, you should seriously give it a try. Practice your conversations. Clear your thoughts. Express your frustrations. Let your ideas develop. Listen to what you are saying. Encourage yourself.
I am not afraid to talk to myself. Well, that is, when other people are not around me, judging me. It actually comforts me. There is power in saying things out loud – yes, even if you are the only one who hears them.
I strongly believe that I have become a better leader by talking to myself. I often practice difficult conversations out loud and in front of a mirror to hear exactly what I am saying and how I am saying it. I have learned to control my facial expressions and tone that way, leading to more open and productive conversations. In addition, I encourage myself out loud. Yes, exactly what you’re thinking: “Keep it up, Joni,” or “Don’t let it get to you,” or “Look at what just happened as a result of your efforts.” Again, there is power in the spoken word.
It might seem strange. It might seem like a little thing, but it has made me a better leader. Go ahead. Try it. It’s just your own voice. And it’s powerful.
