I have my own feelings about hospitals, or acute-care facilities, having “VIP suites” or “special amenities units” for whomever hospital administration deems worthy of such rooms, but I want to know what you think.

How do patients or their families get to express preferences on care givers among RN’s that they do with physicians? I recall when my first daughter was born (and though an RN myself, scared all the same) how wonderful one of the nurses were and how at ease I felt when she came by. As an Economist, I wondered, what would I have gladly paid to have her entire attention for the 12 hours?
My answer to myself was that I would easily have paid $300.00 for that piece of mind (my daughter is 20 know, so that would likely double today).
RN’s don’t get to extract their marginal value as do physicians. And when they decide they need to, the leave nursing. I’m not certain that’s what we want.
