Perhaps I have needed someone to lead me, mentor me, to help me through some difficult moments. Maybe I have been looking for leaders around me more, so I have found more of them. Maybe I have simply been more aware of my time with colleagues. Whatever the case, I have noticed the leaders beside me more – those working right alongside me.

I am fortunate to have numerous nurse leaders all around me as colleagues, and recently I have been tapping their leadership and knowledge more. Chances are, you are also surrounded by a true wealth of leaders – your very nurse colleagues. Relationships are what you make of them, and I have been astounded recently to learn eye-opening skills of my co-workers and friends. Take some time to talk with your colleagues…more than “What do you think I should do about _____.”

I’m thankful for the leaders beside me because, frankly, sometimes I get tired of leading and am met with brilliant answers right across the hall.
