I have never worked in an organization with a shared governance structure. Similarly to others, I have had a difficult time explaining the concept to others because it was only a theory to me. I had never seen it in practice. Until now.
The system I currently work in does have a shared governance nursing practice model, and I was able to attend my first meeting last week. In short, I was amazed and proud to be a part of such a great organization comprised of amazing nurses working to make patient care better. Nurses from all disciplines and leadership levels worked together to make individual and collective practice better. One of the things I loved the most, though, was the routinely random celebration of nurses, nursing, and the shared governance model’s work throughout the Network.
I’m ready to jump right in. This is going to be good.

If you want a better understanding of shared governance, go to my website, http://www.sharedgovernance.org/index.htm, and click on the Overview hyperlink. This is a modern concept for today’s healthcare professionals. Even the physicians have gotten on board with this one in some hospitals.
