Last week I mentioned some of my favorite places to find free, full-text nursing journal articles. Special thanks to my friend and brilliant colleague, Susan Thrane, for pointing out that open access nursing journals are also great sources, and nurse authors should be encouraged to publish in such journals.

Fabulous idea, Susan!

I honestly haven’t even thought of open access nursing journals. For some reason I undervalued the information – a common problem with free stuff, but it turns out that many open access nursing journals are peer-reviewed. Say what? Yep. All that great research and scholarly information available for F.R.E.E.

I searched yesterday and found plenty ‘o nursing research to whet my palate for a while. This is the most complete list of open access nursing journals I have found so far. It was published in 2009, though, so I am sure there are more. There are also  numerous international nursing journals available as open access. Some of those listed are in English, but most of the journals are in another language, which is great news for our colleagues worldwide. And, if you’re ever in need of open access journals from another profession (business, biology, medicine, religion, etc.) the University of Colorado Libraries has an excellent list of open access journals for perusal.

Thanks, Susan, for opening up a whole new world to me and others!
